Wrought Iron Chandeliers
49When we think about chandeliers, the image that springs to mind is often cascades of delicate glass or crystal. This style of chandelier is often associated with high class venues such as theatres, formal dining rooms, or elegant homes.
The wrought iron chandelier turns this concept on its head. Wrought iron chandeliers can still have elegance and grace in the design, but by their nature they are fairly rough, chunky, and heavy. Wrought iron can be hand made by skilled blacksmiths, and the artisanal look of a handmade piece is quite a fashionable look in a time when people are slowly moving away from mass produced items and more towards natural and authentic design styles. Wrought iron chandeliers can work very well with quite minimal furniture, and look fantastic with dark, natural floorboards.
Wrought iron chandeliers could vary in size anywhere from a foot to more than a metre. Often they do include glass as part of the design, but some interesting pieces eschew this approach, instead focusing on working with the qualities of the material and showcasing it’s beauty. The most common method to actually light any chandelier is with electric bulbs, but it is also possible to find iron chandeliers that hold candles. Safety is always a concern with these, and they should probably not be used under a relatively low ceiling. If candles are the desired method of lighting, wrought iron sconces designed to take candles can also be found.
When caring for any wrought iron piece, it is important to guard against rust. Iron is prone to rusting, so while it is fine to clean your chandelier with soap and water, make sure it is dried well afterwards and apply a suitable metal polish occasionally. Be sure not to hang your chandelier in a damp place.
