You also get a boost in search engine results if you have a links pointing to your site in other places.

2. Pick subjects that people want to read about

There is no point creating a site about how to build paper planes if only 60 people a month actually search for that term in google. Even if you provide great information about the subject, you will not get enough traffic to make you any money. You also need to make sure that there isn't too much competition already for the subject you choose. Of course there is always more to learn, but if you pick a topic that people want to read about, set up your site correctly with good information about that topic, and promote your site, you are well on the way.
